Hydroxyapatite nanoparticles

PROJECT

The project focuses on the development of methods suitable for production of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles for medical applications (drug delivery carriers, tissue engineering materials, coatings for implants, etc.). The aim of the present work is to improve semi-batch process of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles production and to move to continuous processes. In the assumption, synthesized particles should exhibit chemical and crystalline structure of hydroxyapatite, and their sizes should not exceed 30-40 nanometers, which is the size of those calcium phosphates present in bodies of the vertebrates. All those properties should give the synthesized nanoparticles biomimetic properties, which will lead to enhancement of regeneration of bone tissue or implant integration. Aggregates of the particles will find applications as additional materials in bone defects filling materials. Our work on hydroxyapatite nanoparticles lead to the patent application and implementation of the technology to commercial use based on project funded by European Union. Now, we are developing this technology within research grants:
